The Fruit of the Spirit – Goodness
Spiritual Fruit is not a result of self effort.
Goodness is God’s character!
Do you remember that childhood prayer?
“God is great, God is good, Let us thank him for our food.”
Mark 10:17-18 Was Jesus literally questioning the inquiring young man, “Are you calling me GOD?”
“There is none good but one, that is God!”
All goodness proceeds from The Lord, no one else. We find that Goodness has it’s origin in God.
Jacob prayed for the protection of God – Genesis 32:9-12
Joseph described the providence of God – Genesis 50:20
Moses was promised the Blessings of God – Numbers 10:29-32
Job proclaimed the Goodness of God – Job 2:9-10
Our Lord determines to place this goodness in us!
Galatians 5:22-23 – The Fruit of the Spirit
Consider man’s inability:
Ecclesiastes 7:20 Romans 7:18-19
Question: Why was Barnabas called good? Acts11:22-24
Verse 24: He was saved, Holy Spirit filled. The resulting evidence, many people were saved.
Barnabas was described as a “Good Man.”
Psalms 37:23-24 – It is not in man to direct his own steps.
Friend, the Holy Spirit is busy in the believer producing the Fruit of the Spirit called “Goodness.” Galatians 5:16
God, who is good, is conforming us to the image of Christ.
Romans 8:28-29 II Corinthians 3:17-18
I’m struggling with how to say this!
Friend, we are NOT imitating Jesus!
The Fruit of the Spirit allows Jesus to become himself in us and through us!
I Corinthians 15:10
Philippians 1:6
Colossians 2:6-10
I Thessalonians 5:24
Listen friend, we are Not to imitate Christ! That makes us a small imitation of The Real Christ.
I desire the reality – The Lord Jesus! Colossians 1:27
Consider Ephesians 1:12-14
Question: Will we ever be like Jusus? YES!
I John 3:1-3
Galatians 5:16 – We don’t grow the Fruit of the Spirit but we can be connected to the vine. John 15:5
The Believer’s Power for Goodness
The glove cannot do anything by itself, but when my hand is in it, the glove can do many things. True, it is not the glove, but my hand in the glove acts. The Christian is a glove. It is the Holy Spirit in us, the hand, who does the work.
Surely you remember “The Golden Rule?”
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Matthew 7:12
Goodness or Revenge
Releasing Hurt
A little boy was sitting on a park bench in obvious pain. A man walking by asked him what was wrong. The young boy said, “I’m sitting on a bumble bee.”
The man urgently asked, “Then why don’t you get up?” The boy replied, “Because I figure I’m hurting him more than he is hurting me!”
How many of us handle hurt and forgiveness like this little boy? We endure pain for the sadistic satisfaction of believing we are hurting our offender more than he is hurting us.
When we get off the bench of unforgiveness we can begin to realize relief from our pain.
Enjoy the Fruit of the Spirit, Goodness, a gift of Grace.
Come to the Lord Jesus
