The Fruit of the Spirit – Meekness

Galatians 5:22-23

Meekness was Below His Education Level.
A young man who had been hired by a large supermarket reported to work. The manager greeted him with a warm handshake and a smile, handed him a broom and said, “Your first job will be to sweep out the store.”
“But,” the young man said. “I’m a college graduate.”
“Oh! I’m sorry,” the manager said, “I didn’t know that. Here Let me help you. Give me the broom and I’ll show you how.”

Meekness is gentle teachability.

“Meekness” May be one of the most difficult Fruit of the Spirit to define! (How do I begin?)
“Meekness” never implies weakness. Moses was the meekest man on earth. Numbers 12:3
“Meekness” Is not given by itself – The Fruit of the Spirit comes in nine Wonderful Flavors. Galatians 5:22-23

If you’re thinking in your own strength that you possess meekness, you probably don’t.
An individual was awarded a medal “The Most Humble Christian” which the church took away because he wore it all the time. Galatians 6:3

While humility and meekness are similar, they are not the same.
Humility – This is not thinking little of yourself. It is not thinking about yourself at all.
Meekness – This is the quality of teachability. A spirit filled “meek” person isn’t a know-it-all.

“Meekness,” being Fruit of the Spirit, is a God given desire to receive the love of the truth.

“Meekness” is a God given attitude. More than just gentle, but also grateful to God.

Mathew 5:5 “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the Earth.”

Romans 12:3                 Romans 12:16-21       I Corinthians 4:5-7

Pay Attention Please! “Meekness”
The bible tells us to:
Ephesians 4:1-3
Colossians 3:12-13
I Timothy 6:11-12
II Timothy 2:23-26
Titus 3:2
James 3:13-18

Question: How do we obey these commands of scripture without the Fruit of the Spirit called meekness?

Impossible! The Lord desires to bestow, the Fruit of the Spirit, meekness, in His Children.

Matthew 11:28-30

One of the ugliest traits in all the world is CONCEIT, it is the opposite of meekness.

Someone says, “I’m not conceited! I don’t think I know it all! I know that I know it all!”

Friend! Few things adorn accomplishment as “meekness!”

Meekness Demonstrated
A truly meek man Is hard to find, yet God delights to honor such selfless people. Booker T Washington, the renowned black educator, was an outstanding example of this truth.
Shortly after he became the presidency of Tuskegee Instititute in Alabama, he was walking in an exclusive section of town when he was stopped by a wealthy woman. Not knowing the famous Mr. Washington by sight, she asked if he would like to earn a few dollars by chopping wood for her.
Because he had no pressing business at the moment, Professor Washington smiled, rolled up his sleeves, and proceeded to do the humble chore she had requested. When he was finished, he carried the wood into the house and stacked it by the fireplace. A little girl recognized him later and revealed Booker T. Washington’s identity to the lady.
The next morning the embarrassed woman went to visit Mr. Washington in his office at the Institute and apologized profusely. “It is perfectly all right, Madam,” he replied. “Occasionally I enjoy a little manual labor. Besides, it’s always a delight to do something for a friend.” She shook his hand warmly and assured him that his meek attitude had endeared him and his institute to her heart. Not long afterward she showed her admiration by persuading wealthy acquaintances to join her in donating thousands of dollars to the Tuskegee Institute.

This Fruit of the Spirit is Meekness

Meekness is the ability to disagree agreeably!
Meekness is the ability to give soft answers to rough questions! Galatians 6:1-2
Godly meekness empowers believers to give honest, hard answers to rebellious people. Acts 5:29

All believers are to experience the Fruit of the Spirit. This is God’s desire for His children.

Let me explain – I Corinthians 13:4-8
The Fruit of the Spirit is Charity – The God kind of love.

Love doesn’t find its perfect expression without,

“Joy” – “Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth” I Corinthians 13:6
“Peace” – “Is not easily provoked” I Corinthians 13:5
“Longsuffering” – “Charity suffereth long” I Corinthians 13:4
“Gentleness” – “Charity…is kind.” I Corinthians 13:4
“Goodness” – “Thinketh no evil” I Corinthians 13:5
“Faith” – “Believeth all things” I Corinthians 13:7
“Meekness” – “Charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up” I Corinthians 13:4
“Temperance” – “Doth not behave itself unseemly” I Corinthians 13:5

Question: Why does the Lord desire meekness?
1) So we may be teachable Matthew 11:29
2) So he may exalt us I Peter 5:6
3) So he may not despise us Psalm 51:17
4) So he may enter our presence Psalm 34:18
5) So we may receive more grace James 4:6
6) So our prayers are heard Psalm 66:18
7) The secret to greatness Luke 18:14

This is the war we all experience Galatians 5:16
Please be careful: Pride may slip in.

Pride, We start acting like we deserve more from god and from others than we are receiving.
Pride, We act as though the universe was built for our benefit.
Pride, Our being deprived of anything ranks as an unforgiveable injustice.
Pride, will have us believing that we have been mistreated in life.

The wise among us will join the publican of Luke 18:13

By the Fruit of the Spirit, we will embrace what Meekness really is.

King David        II Samuel 16:5-13 – What would be your response?
Example            II Samuel 19:15-23 – This was King David’s response!

“Meekness,” Fruit of the Spirit,
Pastor David Hart
